Lucky Hills Escapes

Make a Weekend of It

Short trips. Big views. Four itineraries built around a single region each, because the fastest way to ruin a weekend is to try to see two.

48 Hours in Adelaide Hills

A first night in Stirling or Aldgate keeps everything close. Saturday works best as a loop — Hahndorf early before the main street fills, then east through Woodside and Lobethal with stops wherever the cellar doors look quiet. Sunday is for the Mount Lofty summit and a long breakfast on the way back into Adelaide.

A Slow Weekend in Yarra Valley

The mistake in the Yarra is trying to fit in eight cellar doors. Pick three, book one proper lunch, and leave an afternoon free for the drive up toward Healesville and the fern gullies beyond it. A morning at a produce market and a walk in the Dandenongs rounds it out.

Perth Hills Forest Escape

Base yourself around Kalamunda or Mundaring and walk. Sections of the Bibbulmun Track start close by, the reservoir loops are gentle, and the escarpment lookouts are worth timing for late afternoon when the light runs flat across the coastal plain.

Macedon Ranges Road Trip

This one is about the roads. Loop Woodend to Trentham to Kyneton with detours up Mount Macedon, and give yourself permission to stop at every garden gate and bakery. Autumn is the obvious season, but a clear winter weekend with a fire at the other end is arguably better.

Road Trips

Driving is most of the point

Hill regions reward the drive between stops more than the stops themselves. A few things worth knowing before you set out.

01

Add a third to every estimate

Mapping apps assume steady speeds. Winding hill roads, stock, cyclists and the stop you did not plan mean the real number is always higher.

02

Drive out, wander back

Get to the far point early while the roads are quiet, then take your time on the return. It makes a two-hour loop feel like a day.

03

Fuel and phone signal

Both thin out quickly once you leave the main road. Fill up in the last decent-sized town and download your map before you lose reception.
